Saturday, 18 October, 2014: A Study Morning

In contrast to our usual annual lecture, we are providing the opportunity for participants to explore very recent mother/infant research and its relation to therapeutic practice.

Speakers: Valérie Mortin and Helen Dalton

Valérie Mortin is a Child and Adolescent Psychotherapist trained at the BPF (previously known as the BAP). She has been lecturing since 2009 for the Birkbeck MSc in the Psychodynamics of Human Development focusing on the first year of life, including preparing for parenthood and the latest findings in neurosciences. She works in independent practice in Herefordshire and for the NHS in Carmarthenshire Specialist CAMHS as a Child and Adolescent Psychotherapist.

Helen Dalton is an adult psychotherapist. She has worked in CAMHS for many years where she developed her interest in clinical work with parents and infants. She teaches the first year of life on an M.Sc., 'The psychodynamics of human development. Helen now works with children and adolescents with gender dysphoria at the Tavistock Clinic in London.

Title: "Binding the Baby"

A psychodynamic exploration of very recent mother/infant research and its relationship to therapeutic practice across the age spectrum. The implications for early development and therapeutic encounter will include the ideas of Daniel Stern from his book 'The Inter-relational world of the infant'.

The presentation will be followed by small group discussions, before a large group to allow feedback from the small groups and questions to the speaker.

It will be useful to have read Beatrice Bebe's 2005 paper (click the link left to download).
